When she was 40, Jack thought Cher was too old and not sexy enough to be in Witches of Eastwick.

Unbelievable. The Witches of Eastwick is one of those fun, sexy movies you get excited to re-watch when you realize it's back on HBO. And we're just now learning that Jack Nicholson and the director George Miller thought Cher wasn't the right choice. On stage at the Borgata last week, she told the story of how she had really been dreading her 40th birthday but after having a great party to commemorate the milestone she was feeling much more optimistic.

"So I went to sleep, dreaming these fabulous thoughts of being 40 and it was good. And I was going to get all these movies and I was just so happy. And in the morning, my telephone rang and the man said, 'Hi, Cher, it's George Miller.' I said, 'Hey, George.' He was the director of Witches of Eastwick. So he said, 'I just wanted to call and tell you that I don't want you in my movie and Jack Nicholson and I think you're too old and you're not sexy.' Good morning, 40!"

"I was heartbroken. I wanted this movie so badly. Usually, in Hollywood, if you insult somebody, you hang up.  He didn't want to hang up. He just wanted to tell me everything: 'I hate the way you walk, I hate the way you talk, I don't like the color of your hair, I don't like your eyes.'"

"So, finally I was like, 'OK, look mother—,' yeah, I said the whole thing. I said, 'You didn't find me under a rock. I was nominated for an Academy Award for Silkwood. And I got the Cannes Film Festival award for best actress for Mask. So, goodbye!'" -THR

Can you imagine what that must have been like?? To be criticised out loud and in such detail.  Bear in mind, Susan Sarandon was 41 in 1987 and Michelle Pfeiffer was the youngest at 29. But as many times as I've watched the film, I thought they were all around the same age which if I had to guess I would have said was early 30s!

Jack was 50 years old, mind you, and apparently no one was talking to him about being too old and unsexy with his very receding hairline to be in the film. Interesting, no. Turns out Mom's life lesson #35 was right -- if you don't stand up for yourself, no one else will.

And by the way, if you haven't seen Jack lately, here he is at a basketball game in April of this year.
