How is it Hunk of Burnin' Love Sam Elliott just got his first Oscar Nom

January 23, 2019

His career has spanned 50 years, starting with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and over the years Sam Elliot has become an icon in film and television.

His body of work is dizzying and, in my humble opine, it's all wonderful. The Contender, Thank You for Smoking, The Yellow Rose --- just a few faves that spring to mind, but in all that time he was never nominated for an Oscar. So what do you think his reaction was when he found out he was finally nominated for his supporting role in A Star is Born:

I think the thing off the top of my head might be, ‘It’s about f–king time. Beyond that, it’s really about the work; it’s just about the creative process. It’s great to be recognized for that, that’s really all it’s about.

Everyone has a favorite Sam Elliott movie and the other night Regina King was talking about hers to Jimmy Kimmel. She saw him at The Golden Globes and couldn't resist the urge to walk right up to him and fangirl. Skip ahead to the 4:38 mark:

I just love how Jimmy called him an 'under the radar sex symbol.' Under his radar!

And let's not overlook the deep timbers of his voice. Makes him even more irresistable, whether you're watching him on screen or listening to an ad for Dodge Ram.

This year the Academy may be trying harder than usual to get it right because Swazi-English actor Richard E. Grant is also nominated for the first time (yes, Swaziland is a place). And his reaction is pretty terrific:
