SJP: C'mon let's do another movie? KIM: Not if your effing life depended on it!

February 12, 2018

Have you ever had a friend or a co-worker who was jealous of you? Of your work, or how you looked or dressed or spoke or whatever. It doesn't matter exactly because it all means the same thing -- you were getting the attention wanted by another. It happens at work and it happens in women's friendships. And it's a major bummer. So when Kim Cattrall's character became the scene-stealer on the set of Sex and the City, SJP didn't like it. And that began a tension between the two that would last the entire course of their working relationship.

Sarah Jessica saw herself as the lead character and since she was the narrator perhaps she was, but I never thought of it that way. Just like I couldn't pick the lead character from Friends. When it's an ensemble cast it takes the whole ensemble to make it work. The cast of Friends understood that and when it came time to renegotiate after the initial success, they banded together to each be paid the same amount of money per episode.

Not the case for Sex and the City. If you've ever seen an interview with SJP you know how tedious she is, waxing on and on, taking herself very seriously and it's so boring. She's not authentic. But she does believe she deserves your time and attention. And when contracts were negotiated on SATC, she was not interested in equal pay for her castmates. Which tells you a lot about her character. So, she made more money and got more involved in character development and helped perpetuate a double standard that was hurtful to her colleague. Kim didn't get to keep her bra on. Kim didn't get to executive produce. And Kim was not embraced as a friend (even superficially) by the other women on the set. Instead she spent a lot of time alone in her trailer and that's fine. This was business, not friendship. Many times the two go hand in hand, but not necessarily and Kim handled it like a grown-up. But after a while, there's only so much bullsh*t we're willing to tolerate. And last week Kim Cattrall had had enough.

My Mom asked me today “When will that @sarahjessicaparker, that hypocrite, leave you alone?” Your continuous reaching out is a painful reminder of how cruel you really were then and now. Let me make this VERY clear. (If I haven’t already) You are not my family. You are not my friend. So I’m writing to tell you one last time to stop exploiting our tragedy in order to restore your ‘nice girl’ persona. Copy and paste link

Boom. This is how you cut through the façade of the Hollywood machine. In ordinary times Kim might have turned a blind eye to all the interviews SJP has done of late feigning the 'oh, gosh, that wasn't my experience' bit but the older we get, the less we care about appearances. And the unexcepted loss of Kim's brother also must be giving her crystal clear perspective. If you've ever lost anyone close to you, as painful as it is, you know there comes with it a kind of clarity that's as vivid as technicolor. You don't have to think or prioritize about what's important, you just know. And I think it's in that place of clarity that Kim picked up a match and set fire to the pretense once and for all.
