Abbott announces plan for bars to reopen

AUSTIN ( -- Texas Gov. Greg Abbott says bars in counties across the state with low COVID-19 hospitalizations can re-open to 50 percent beginning October 14, if county judges opt in.

Abbott made the announcement Wednesday afternoon on social media.

"Even as more businesses have opened and students return to school, Texans have shown we can contain the spread of COVID-19," Abbott said in a statement. "Thanks to Texans following the best health practices, our state is prepared for additional openings, including bars."

Abbott's plan also calls for businesses such as amusement parks, movie theaters, zoos, aquariums, and bowling alleys to expand to 75% capacity, also on October 14.

Abbott teased the announcement in a tweet shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday, saying it "sure would be good to watch my Facebook page about an hour from now."
